902 Initial Level License

Becoming a school library media specialist in Wisconsin is a two-stage process. Competencies for both levels of license can be found at the DPI website. The UWSSLEC distance education program will prepare you for both stages of the license. You must do the initial level license before the professional level license.

For those already holding a professional teaching license, the 902 Instructional Library Media Specialist license at the Initial level is called the 902 Professional with Stipulations. These two licenses involve the same courses, but the name depends on whether or not you already have a professional teaching license. If your teaching license is at the professional level, your initial library license is a professional license with stipulations; if your teaching license is at the initial level, your library license will be an initial license. In both cases, the first stage of licensure is followed by a professional license.

902 Initial Requirements:

  • Hold or be eligible for a teaching license in an area other than school library media services
  • 21 credits of coursework plus supervised practicum experiences(3 to 6 credits)
    • Courses can be taken as an undergraduate minor on the UW Eau Claire, Oshkosh, Superior, or Whitewater campuses, as a special student on campus, or at the graduate level on campus or in the UWSSLEC distance program.
  • See individual campuses for GPA and portfolio requirements for licensure
